We will be joined by the winemaker of this important boutique Australian estate based in the cool climate zone of Mornington Peninsula in coastal Victoria. Specialising in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay they offer the fascinating contrast to the estate wines of De Bortoli from the previous evening

Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1983, Napa Valley

Robert Mondavi was the granddaddy of the California wine scene who invested millions in the 1960’s in discovering the best sites for winemaking in the now legendary Napa Valley. His distinctive mission style winery was the first to be build here after Prohibition and became an icon for the dreams and aspirations of the winemakers who have gone to establish this as one of the world’s most esteemed terroirs. Using the classic varieties of Bordeaux such as Cabernet they crafted long living wines based on the French model but with that extra lush ripeness of the west coast. This is perfectly stored parcel of a benchmark Napa wine is offered at an extraordinary price and we can avow from much personal experience that it is drinking beautifully, in fact much better than many 1983’s from classed growth chateaux of Bordeaux.

D’Angelo Aglianico del Vulture 1999 Riserva

A very small parcel here of a classic, old school Aglianico from the Campania region of southern Italy, close to Naples. Aglianico is a hefty, thick skinned variety that requires long aging to bring out its aromas of smoked meat, blackberry and leather, and that is exactly what we have here. A mature wine with lots of complexity, structure and fascinating flavour, it is truly the claret of the south. Less than three cases available. Your only challenge might be getting the 25 year old cork out, so you may want to invest in a decent corkscrew!
