Red: Sacred Hill Cabernet/Merlot 2007
No fewer than three Australian wine magazines voted De Bortoli Aussie producer of the year in 2007 and Steve Webber picked up the prize for best winemaker. This is soft, easy and packed with berry fruit.
White: Le Lesc 2007
Lesc is a fresh, crisp, zingy quaffer hailing from acclaimed Caves de Plaimont in south-west France. Just the sort of thing to hand out as an aperitif or to enjoy over the course of an evening as its alcohol is a relatively mild 11.5%.

Party FizzJaume Serra Brut Nature Cava
If you want your party to make a bit of a splash, why not go for a bit of fizz. This is proper, estate-bottled cava from a fine, respected producer made in a dry "brut nature" style. It mixes lemon citrus fruit, a touch of nuttiness and a subtly rich texture.

Posh FizzMandois Brut Origine NV Champagne
ToW regulars will know just how good Mandois champagne is. This small family firm, based in the small town of Pierry, just south of Epernay, makes wines that are regular award winners (Coup de Coeur, Guide Hachette 2008) and listed by a number of Michelin 3 star restaurants. A great aperitif style, its quality so far exceeds most of the big names that it is almost embarrassing. The magnums are especially creamy and delicious.
